Do you use cloth diapers?

Question

With my first child, I only used disposable diapers. I am due with baby #2 in August. I am thinking about cloth diapers. What do I need to know?

I used cloth with my son and loved them. I started with mostly fuzzibunz and mini nb g diapers but then switched to tri folds with a snappi and a thirsties cover. They fit better and leaked less. Also, they were cheaper. If you need any guidance please don't hesitate to ask. I tried a lot of different brands over the 18 months my son used them.

I use bum genius. Try a few different brands and styles to find what works for your baby. We had trouble with leaks with other brands, so I sold what didn't work on eBay and bought more bum genius.  We have 23 per child in our stash.

For washing, I recommend a diaper sprayer. It attaches to the toilet and I use it to get solid waste off the diapers. Once rinsed, I throw them in a pail (I use a trash can with a lid with a washable bag in it).  And I wash them every two to three days.

Most rash creams will ruin cloth diapers, so make sure to have one on hand that you can use. I've rarely needed rash cream though.

If you have an HE washer, be prepared to have a very long wash cycle. My old house had a standard, top load washer, and it did a much better job cleaning diapers than my new HE washer. We currently run a double rinse on cold, hot wash on heavy with detergent and extra rinse. It takes about 3 hours.  Old washer took half the time and came out cleaner.
