Gest. Diabetes test. Optional?

Question

Can you request to NOT do this? If I am not showing ANY signs for it or have a history of it can I just choose not to have it. 1st - the drink is awful
2nd- I hate needles
3rd- I really don't want to bring my 2 year old to a 3 hour appt!

Anything healthcare related is always optional. But if you decide to not follow your doctor's plan of care he can decide not to see you as a patient. I would do anything that can prevent complications that isn't that invasive, but I'm a healthcare professional and see worst case scenarios on a daily basis.

I declined it my first pregnancy when I saw an ob. He gave me a scare tactic but I told him I as confident if I had GD I would know. I had none of the risk factors. I didn't see an ob my next two pregnancies so didn't have to decline it, it just wasn't an option. Aviva Romm, an md that practiced as a midwife for many years, has some great posts on her blog about the glucola drink and of the GD test should be required for everyone. Check those out.

I've never taken one. 3 healthy pregnancies and honestly none of my providers even suggested it. 
I would have declined unless there was an indication of problems anyway.

Ya my doctor doesn't do the 1 hour tests bc so many women fail them when they shouldnt. I'll just ask him..  he doesn't like to do unnecessary things, so I guess we will see. I have heard of women opting out of it, but they had to put up a big fight.

Any midwife mommas out there? Do you still take the test?

Of course it is optional. All of the tests are optional- it is your body! Even if your doc doesn't put it that way, it really is up to you.
Some of the ingredients of the syrup are questionable, so I think when it comes time I will ask them for an alternative.

I had to! But first one was prick. Later I got stuck needle 3 or 4 times because I failed my first test. Don't eat befor it but do just egg. Also I'm afraid of needles.

I told them I wasn't taking it but would be interested in doing an alternative so I believe I'll check my blood sugars after eating for a week or so.

I don't think it is optional. Every person I know has had to do it during all their pregnancies. My sister in law has four kids and never even came close to having it during any of them, but had to take the test each time.

The first test is usually only an hour at least my sisters was if you pass that no need for 3 hour test! Idk if it's optional or not that would be a question for your doctor
