I'm a licensed makeup artist and I highly recommend going to school. You learn the correct way to do makeup and all of the business side to it, including how to create contracts and discuss business with your clients. 
Putting makeup on yourself and doing it on another person are two completely different things. There are different techniques, different looks, different everything. If it is your passion then I highly suggest looking further into schooling for it! (:

The best way to learn is definitely school and putting makeup on other people! We become experts at doing our own face but the real challenge is doing others with unfamiliar skin textures and shades. You can do it!

If you want to be a makeup artist you will need a license and some schooling. That should teach you what you need to know and fill in any gaps in your technique.  If it is your passion, go for it. :)
