Used baby stuff vs new?

My husband and I got in a debate yesterday about used vs new. I'm all for used baby clothes (at least some of them), but other than that I want new. He was like, you can't possibly want new for something like a car seat. I was like, ESPECIALLY for a car seat (I think it would be safer - may be a wrong assumption). He looked at me like I was crazy for wanting a new car seat. We make very good money too so I don't know what the issue is. We can easily afford it. My husband's mom is like the garage sale queen though so I wonder if any of that is rubbing off on him... What are you guys doing?

Out of everything the car seat should be brand new. That's not worth the risk of it being damaged or expired.

I've been told by everyone that you can get everything used except the car seat because the regulations on them change so often.

I have a similar issue with my partner. I didn't mind getting given hand me downs, but I also think it is ok to have some new clothes and new things in general. His mum is a hoarder of things she used for her kids and what has been gotten for the other grandkids, she had 4 big garbage bags of just baby clothes that she brought out for us to have (most of these had been so used they should have been thrown out). I was expected to take all of them I think, but I sat at her house and went through, picked out what I wanted and left the rest. My point is my partner was raised to reuse absolutely everything, I had to put my foot down and demand a new car seat and a new pram, these were 2 things I would not be skimping on or get 2nd hand. Because 2nd hand car seats are not safe! Don't accept anything less than what your baby deserves. He will get over it. :)

We are buying everything new, because our son is 7, and we have nothing from his younger years. However some things I will shop around on eBay for.

Most of the Time places won't sell used car seats. At least not here in fl because if they've been involved in an accident they can become faulty.

When it comes to the car seat, ask him if he'd buy a used bumper for his car. Baby car seats have the same sort of protective materials as the inside of a car's bumper. Once it's in an accident it may look perfectly fine but it's really not any good! A 2nd accident would be disastrous. He may understand that analogy. 😜

I'm ok with used as long as I know where it came from but will definitely be getting a new car seat, stroller, crib and mattress

Should never reuse a car seat.. Ever, but especially from a yard sale of people you don't know.. If a car seat is in an accident it should never be used again, even if it doesn't appear to be damaged, and if you get one at a yard sale you will never know what has happened to that seat.. Also car seats have an expiration date and should be registered. Never a good idea to reuse a car seat!

As for everything else, I personally prefer new! But that's just cause I hate hand me downs.. Not sure if it's cause I'm the youngest of 4 and lived off hand me downs or not, but I just love new! I already have a daughter and am pregnant with number 2, and even if this one is a girl I will still get all new stuff! I'll reuse her clothes if I can but not all of them and I'll obviously reuse big things like swings, toys, pack n play etc. but def getting a new car seat and stroller!
