Metformin for PCOS?

Hello, my lab results just came back and my doc confirmed that I have PCOS based on my symptoms and testosterone level. He is my general family doctor but I see my OBGYN for an ultrasound next week because I had gone to her about pains in my left ovary. So I will talk to my OBGYN about the PCOS diagnosis also. But my regular doctor said we could either start on Metformin or just start trying to get pregnant and see if we can do it naturally. Has anyone taken Metformin for PCOS? I know I would have to keep away from sugar and carbs but are there any other major drawbacks? Thanks in advance!
