At what age should you stop breastfeeding you child?

I think whenever the child's mother ready to stop I'm currently breastfeeding my 23 month old and he's not ready to stop and neither am I so whenever the time is right child will let you know but your milk does not expires at 12 months just so you know

I'm currently breastfeeding my 17 month old at bed time. It's a comfort thing for her, the same as another baby who uses a pacifier. My daughter never took a pacifier, so I am her comfort. I stopped EBF at 8 months and started introducing solids, and at 13 months slowly started weaning her from day time nursing and getting her to eat more during meal times. This Saturday I'm having to stop nursing her entirely, not because I want to but because I'm in the army reserves and I have to leave for 3 weeks for field training. If I could, I would have let her nurse at bed time until she's ready to stop, my preference being before 2 though. Before I had her, I decided to try nursing and was hoping to make 2 weeks for the colostrum, then my goal was to try for 3 months, then my next goal was 6 months. I couldn't breastfeed my oldest at all, so I didn't think I would be able to bf #2 either. I'm so grateful that I could, and I don't care what people think about my nursing a 1 1/2 year old. So I'm not voting on your poll, since I don't think any mother should be told she should stop breastfeeding at 6, 9, or 12 months. It's her body, her baby, and her choice.

There's no "age", I voted for my personal preference, which is about 9 months, but I know women who have breast fed their babies until 5 yrs+. Too me that's a bit much but the power of breast milk could easily over rule me.

It is recommended that children continue to breastfeed for at least 12 months. Now you can always pump and bottle feed, some women wean at 6 months, switching to formula. Some women don't pump and will continue to breastfeed their child until they are 4 or 6... It honestly up to the mother and what she feels comfortable doing. I will be a working mother, I will be pumping as well as breastfeeding and I plan to give my baby breast milk for at least a year, maybe longer. It's what I am comfortable doing.

When ever the baby indicated that he/she doesn't want to nurse anymore, my daughter is 10 months old and I don't think she's going to stop any time soon. Plus my mom nursed me until I was 3 years old and I kinda hope my girl won't go that long but who knows right?
