Midwife?!

Has anyone used a midwife? What do they offer? Did you enjoy your midwife?

The practice I'm using matches you with an OB and a midwife, alternating your appointments with each. At the end, you get to decide who delivers. Thought this was a cool model! Already favoring the midwife (soooo knowledgable) but we'll see!

I had a midwife deliver our first little girl. Our practice has both OBs and midwives. I always thought I wanted the OB but that afternoon the OB had to preform an emergency C-section so I got the midwife on call. I wouldn't go back and change it for anything!!! She stayed with me the entire time I was pushing - 1.5 hours! She also wasn't in a hurry so I barely tore! I'm 10 weeks along and plan on having my midwife deliver me again!

I see a midwife (CNM) and she will deliver baby too. Midwives are just as trained in low risk pregnancies and labor as obgyn. They just practice a little different. Midwifery is more 'holistic' like they are trained to know you more than just a patient and they practice serving mind body soul... I've been super pleased with the care so far. She feels very informed/knowledgeable but not pushy. I feel like she is teaching me to make the best decisions while I become a mom!

I love midwives. They are less likely to make you have unnecessary procedures or interventions. You really only need an OB if you are high risk.

I see a midwife and I love it!!!! I will have labor with an obgyn but I have all my checkups with a midwife! They are great, and hold a master's level education

I have used a CPM before and am again. The one I see has her own practice and attends home births.

The personal touch is one of the most often talked about benefits. I totally agree. When I have an appointment I don't wait half an hour and see her for 5 mins like I did my OB the first time. 
I go right in. Have the appointment. She listens to heart tones. Does lab work. And then we can discuss any questions or issues at a much less rushed pace.

Being a home birth midwife she is also more inclined to avoid unneeded interventions and choose more natural options than an OB. That's something I really appreciate.

The one I see personally has attended the births of several of her grandchildren and is a lovely warm and knowledgeable woman.

A obgyn really specializes in high risk pregnancy and take more time with those patients. If you come in and have a low risk pregnancy, fur them the appt is almost unnecessary, but money is money. They are more interested in the complications side of pregnancy. When I hear women say, obgyn are not personal..I just laugh bc what more can they do for you then just check you. You are no fun to them, unless you are getting a c section. I was practicing to be a obgyn until I got a good glimpse into the industry and opted out...I love both midwives and obgyn, bc they are both necessary, but I believe obgyn should only be present in emergency situations.
