A note about names from a kindergarten teacher

Courtney
I have taught in kindergarten for 8 years and it's more prominent now to have a classroom of 25 students and only 5 of them have names that are spelled traditionally. It makes it increasingly difficult to teach students how to spell their name if there are letters (especially vowels) added to the name for the sole purpose of making it unique. Please consider this when writing that name on your birth certificate. For many students their name (and other student names in their classroom) is the first word they use to determine sound patterns.
Furthermore, these names will be on their college applications, job applications, and loan applications. Do some research on percentage of callbacks for adults applying to jobs who have strangely spelled names. It may be unfair, but that's the way it is.
A disclaimer: I do understand different cultures have different traditional names and one of my favorite things in my classroom is to showcase diversity and culture. I'm not talking about culturally diverse names, I'm talking about names where the parents have added so many extra vowels and letters to a traditional name that no one even knows how to pronounce it properly, including their poor overwhelmed kindergarten teacher!
