Doctors appointment

Hi me and my SO have been trying for about 7 months now, I haven't got to the doctor cause I wanted to try for a year and than go. But I also have heard that doctors won't run any test until u have been trying for at least a year. Is this true? I eventually want to get my husbands sperm count checked and also make sure everything with me is ok as well. July was the first month that I had more of the "I'm not trying" attitude cause I just want to relax and let it happen when its supposed to.
