It seems to be overly sensitive these days. If I give a description of someone and include their race all of a sudden I get a unapprovong state.

I sometimes avoid speaking about race in order to avoid confrontation. 😕 I work with some racist white people who do not like to be confronted with the notion that they may be racist.

Depends. I hate how sensitive we are about it. It hinders our ability to think of eachother as equals.

Example: many times in my life have I had to help someone find someone else by discription. Race is a identifying factor. Yet most of the time you're met with a snark look, laugher or a remark like "wow, you just say their asian like that?" Or something stupid to that accord. Why yes, I figured their being Asian would help you find the person you're looking for faster...It's the little things that discourag us the most I suppose.

There are are tons of people out there who are colorblind to race. Can even make jokes about them, including their own and, not care. Yet there are so many that still see it as a difference, be it because of racist views or hypersympathetic ones. Both separate us in my opinion.

In what way? I don't like to go into depth about racism as it is not something that directly affects me and likely never will. So I do not feel knowledgeable enough to step in too deep.

I voted sometimes. I've done quite a bit of education on different cultures, and there are still times I hold my tongue out of fear of sounding ignorant or offensive.

I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing though. Asking thoughtful questions should always be welcome, but sometimes I think the best thing to do is listen. If someone from a culture I am not a part of is telling me something about it, I think often the best thing to do is listen and learn. There's nothing wrong with not wanting to offend people.

On the other side, I'll admit if someone is listening and wants to share their thoughts back, sometimes it doesn't go so well. That's why I think having these talks early is so important. I'd like to see all public schools focus more on integration, and spend time teaching children how to have these difficult conversations.

I answered yes, because I'm white and by definition racist in this country. I could say all the well-meaning things in the world and inadvertently make an ass of myself.

That said, I have to own that likely embarrassing myself is not a good enough reason not to speak up and speak out against racism. I can be silent (read: complicit) or I can learn from challenge and correction of my words and do better!
