Pacifier

My baby is 3 weeks old. He constantly cries because he wants something to suck on. We are doing pretty well with bf. Am I wrong or taking a step in the wrong direction if I decide to give him a pacifier now? I don't want to hurt our progress and I don't want him to become dependent on it. If I do give him one, how can it be done in a controlled way... If that makes sense...
