What did you learn in child birthing class?

I want so desperately to take child birthing classes, but my husband is so shy and doesn't want to go. Was wondering what are some of the things that stuck to you during the class that was helpful? I appreciate you for sharing!

One thing she strongly emphasized was to stay calm. If you don't, it can make labor longer and more painful.

She also showed different comfort measures like massage, etc., but said not to use them all too soon in labour or they won't be as effective when the contractions become more intense.

She also said to try getting in the tub around 5.5-6 cm dilated as that is when it is most effective in helping you. Don't get in sooner than that or it won't help much when your contractions become more intense.

She said in early labour to so something to distract yourself. If it is night time, get some sleep.

When your contractions last one minute and are five minutes apart, that is when you should head to the hospital.

Look up the birth boot camp! They have AWESOME online classes. You are a little late in the game (you start them at 25 weeks) but I don't see why you can't just dedicate a few days to get them all done. They have relaxation excercises, labor position demonstration, the whole 9 yards. We did live classes too but these would have been enough. SOOOO MUCH good information. Www.birthbootcamp.com

Mine emphasized being "upright gravity positive" so don't lay down if you can help it ( which is mandatory with an epidural).

Basically know what relaxes you and use them

Speak with your support partner and make sure they understand your wants (on visitors, pain medications, etc) because they will need to be your number one advocate

Everyone has given such great tips on here already! To add on... Keep moving and try to stay upright like someone else mentioned. Think of it as trying to create lots of space in your pelvis to help the baby navigate down. Using birthing balls, walking, squating, lunges, bring on all fours, rolling your hips.... Etc. and then of course this all allows gravity to do its work too :) best of luck! Remember that women have been doing this FOREVER! Trust your body, it knows what to do :)

It was valuable because I'm not sure my husband had much of idea what was going to happen in childbirth. If your husband is the type to sit and read a book on it, you might be able to skip it. But there wasn't anything to be shy about--it was mostly sitting, watching videos, and listening to someone talk.

My SO didn't want to go to our childbirth class either but after the fact he said he felt so much more comfortable and educated about everything. They walked us through the entire birthing process, as well as medications to cope with pain, things they do in case of certain situations, also breathing and stretching exercises for the both of us. I'm really glad we took the class, it was also a way for us to spend time and bond with one another.
