Amber alert?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but can someone explain to me about amber alerts. I just got a text message about one that in my state but not anywhere near me at all. How do these things get sent to me. Is it like through the phone companies. They're just required to send them out to everyone? Or what? I've never gotten one before so it confused me a little

I believe if your phones location is turned on it will alert you of an amber alert no matter how far away from the city or town you are because people usually try to get as far away from the abduction site as possible so they make it statewide so everyone is on alert.

It's to alert people about a missing child..  Regardless of your location bc we are human and humans transport via car. So they might have gone missing in one town 5 hours ago but can be where you are by then. It's for the safety of the child so people can be on the lookout. If it was your child I'm sure you would want the who world to stop watching they were doing and look for your baby.

Amber alerts were invented by a couple who's daughter (I think her name is Tanya?) was kidnapped and everything was on hold and they never got their child back. 
The method is to circulate the information before it is too late. 
It has saved countless children's lives. 
Those texts are just a part of it. Now, if you go out and see that kid in a McDonald's or something. You can alert the authorities and do what you can.

Depending on the phone. I know with the iPhone there is a settings that you can turn on and off to receive emergency notifications.

An abduction has to be seen for the most part.
the little girl Amber whose abduction and murder launched this program, a older gentleman witnessed the abduction.
A car and suspect usually are needed.
The threshold for an Amber alert sucks...but they would be abused in profound ways if the criteria was not meant.

With the E911 services that you pay with your cell phone each month ot includes this. I'm assuming the amber alert is in the same state as you are located. The amber alerts are sent to a system and that's what sends them to your phone as a state wide notice.

Phones are automatically set up to send out emergency alerts, i.e flash floods, tornado warning, amber alerts etc. If you are in the general area. If you don't want to receive them you can shut it off in your settings.
