Mirena, Skyla, and IUDs

I'm looking into getting an IUD as an alternative to a monophasic pill. I don't want to have my period at all or very lightly. People have so many horror stories "of a friend they know" who had Mirena and the hormonal IUDs. My doctor insists it's safe and a better option long term than the pill I've been on for 5-6 years. I'm in my 20s and am wondering what people think/there experiences. Thanks!
