Could you be dilating even if you haven't lost mucus plug?

Question

38 weeks today. Ob will start checking my cervix on Tuesday. I was wondering, I haven't lost any of my mucus plug that I have noticed. Is it possible to be dilating or even lets say go into labor if I haven't lost my plug?

Yes at 38w I was 1cm 70% effaced. Two days later I lost my mucous plug. Haven't been checked again, but I've had some cramping so I'm hoping I have dilated more!

I never noticed with second I never even seen a piece, was check for the first time he told me it was gone. I was really surprised.

Yes, my doctor started checking me at 36 weeks and I was 1 cm dilated and I am
Now 37.2 and still haven't lost it.

I'm 37 weeks 3cm and 60%...still haven't lost it! Maybe some people don't till delivery??

My OB said it doesn't necessarily come out whole or in pieces, but can be more of a snot like discharge over several weeks (lovely visual I know!). So it's possible to lose it without really noticing, if you are already used to having heavier discharge.

I'm 99% sure I lost part of it the other day but because I'm a flush and go kind of gal I nearly missed it.  When I wiped I looked down and there was something mucusy with spotting happening.  I googled it and apparently a lot of women don't even realize when they loose thei mucus plug.

Could you be dilating even if you haven't lost mucus plug?
