Can people become brainwashed?

I've recently ran across a few parents that don't allow their children tv. A few for educational purposes and a few because they become washed to ill-reality...any thoughts???

I don't think TV will do that necessarily. But I do think it can expose kids to stuff a little too early. And watching commercials is probably not very good for anyone lol.

I think it's possible. Cults are a well documented phenomenon. Trauma bonding like Stockholm's syndrome is certainly real. I don't think simple exposure to tv, movies, or music is going to seriously disrupt a child's brain. However, we are always susceptible to messages both conscious and unconscious from the media.

In a way. Reality TV is a trip - people watch these rich, rich people live their ridiculous lives, and they begin to feel as if they don't have enough. Kids think that this is a viable option for their futures. They'll just get famous. I don't know if it counts as brainwashing, but there's definitely a cultural influence to live/look a certain way.

Yes they can. Children are an easy target for consumerism and for opinion based knowledge. I don't believe in having cable so if you give your kids shows one at a time its more controlled.  For instance if you let them use YouTube in a controlled way it could be better or just as bad.

I wasn't allowed to have TV but I was also pretty much part of a cult... so I think "brainwashing" is real but it's just like any other education you get. If you control what kids experience and are exposed to, to some extent you may be able to shape their thinking and future behaviors. I say "may" of course because despite anyone's best efforts to control someone else's perception, some of us challenge it and seek out more and ultimately make decisions for ourselves. At some point I think it is a choice whether people keep their blinders on or seek to continue to explore the world.
