Should we go?

going to visit my SO's extended family. His parents are going too (mil is extremely manipulative and hard to be around. She ruins most experiences and it's a toxic situation) I want to change which weekend we go to visit his extended family (it's a 6 hour drive) but he doesn't want to give his mom that much power. He wants to suck it up and go anyway because it will still be nice to visit with his grandparents and cousins. I think it's a long drive to have a bad stressful time with his mom there. What do you guys think?

Your MIL sounds a lot like my MIL 😒 A year ago I would have said stay home, but in my experience the more I show up at places with a smile on my face the more power I feel. It's true. It's gonna be really awkward the first couple of times but as long as you pre plan when you're going to be around her and brace yourself (wine is my best friend in these situations) it is tolerable in short doses.
