Skipping Placebo Pills

I've been skipping my placebo pills since I started my new birth control in January in the effor to skip my periods and it's not working :/ Instead, my period starts on the first week of my pack and lasts all the way until my second week, usually into the second day. Any info on why this is happening? And if I do start taking my placebo's, am I still going to be protected during that time?
