Should I give baby my last name?

Question

Hi, I'm a FTM in my late 20s and about 6-7 weeks pregnant. I'm "in a relationship" with the soon to be father of my child. I put the relationship status in quotes because it doesn't feel anything like a relationship should. Most of the time I feel alone and he isn't as active as I hope in our current status, which leads me to believe that he won't be committed to being a father.

Anyway, I know it's too early to be thinking of this but I considered giving the child my last name. Reason being is 1) I don't see the  father and I being together much longer in an imbalanced relationship  2) Should I have to proceed and be a single mom, I'd at least like the last names to match.

What do you guys think? **Please keep rude comments to yourself** 😉

Give the baby your last name. That's my only advice.

I would do whatever feels right. Maybe tell the father that since you are feeling so badly that you are considering this option and unless he changes you will follow through with the decision. Or, just tell him that you don't feel comfortable using his name until you are married? Hope this helps.

I told my boyfriend if we have a baby and we aren't married it won't be getting his last name. It should be earned not just automatically given.

Give your child your last name. All of my single mom friends who used the biological fathers last names have regretted it.

Have you considered using both last name? I understand where you are coming from completly. Before my husband and i got married we had our first child and she took on both of our last names. Not to say that i thought everything was going down hill but if it did i could always drop his last name and she still had mine... On the other hand my niece was in your same situation but the guy didnt want to have absolutly no tie with the baby. So she just did her last name. So the preference is up to you. I would wait until later later in the pregnancy to see if he changes any. If he doesn't, give the kid your name. He'll be mad, but its what he gets

When my daughter was born 7 years ago.  I gave her my last name and it has made her so much more secure because she never had to explain why our names were different when her "father" didn't stick around.  I'm now married and my husband plans to adopt her and she wants her name to change to his but while I was single I thought it was so much easier and better for her to have my name.

Don't let him pressure you. Please do whatever you want to do. I'm not
sure if this is my thing or an actual thing, but if you're not married the baby gets your last name.
