Is it possible to drive to the hospital by myself if I am in labor

Any mom did it? My husband and I are working in different places. He won't come over until I am really in labor and it will takes him at least 6-8 hrs to get to where I live. So if I show signs of labor I will immediately drive myself to the hospital which is 10-15 min away. FTM as I am, I might be very ignorant about this. Just thinking that at the beginning the contractions won't be that bad and that frequent. I can get a cab instead of driving myself. I do have a friend who lives close but I don't really want to bother her if it happens in the middle of the night. What do you guys think?
