How many pairs of mittens for a newborn?

I bought about 8 and we got some for our baby shower but I never really used them for my daughter , I just cut her nails and she never scratched herself . I probably won't be using mittens with this baby (my 2nd) either

I never used them.  Just carefully trimmed dd's nails.

My Lo is 4 months and still uses them but not for scratching, she pull the blankets over her face if her hands are bare so she wears mittens at night. I did have them for scratching but after a week started clipping her nails so didn't need them for that reason after a couple of weeks

We didn't use any so far. My son would constantly play with his feeding tube so the nurses would fold over the built in ones on the onesies. Worked just fine.

Never used the seperate mittens. A lot of newborn clothing has fold over mittens incorporated in the sleeves so if I used anything it was that but I mostly just clipped her nails.

My son was a squirmy face scratcher and ALWAYS got his mittens off! I started using his socks after one week and they were PERFECT! I used them for about 3 weeks. I also really LOVED the long sleeve onesies/shirts that had built in "mittens" the sleeves just basically fold over their hands and stay that way.

i never used them. Hands are your baby's best bud when they are in the womb and they can get fussy when you cover them up.
