Painting dark wood furniture?

Question

I want to paint out nursery furniture we have that's a dark wood color to a greyish/white color. Any suggestions on good primers and paints? And possibly brushes to use? We've never painted furniture before so I'm a bit nervous of the outcome as far as streaks go.

I absolutely love chalk paint! It's a little bit more pricey but you don't need a primer. It has a shabby shic look to it. We used Annie Sloan's chalk paint to paint our once cherry wood dining room table to white using it. I also sanded the edges to make it look distressed but that's not necessary.

I would not recommend painting a crib. When your child is teething they if they chew on crib they can chip and swallow the paint. Even if you get the top rail covers they are resourceful and can find places to chew not covered.

We bought an old dark wood entertainment center to convert to a changing table and my mom painted it with chalk paint and it looks fabulous! The best part is there was no prepping involved she just painted it and then did the wax finish. The paint was Annie Sloan and we chose Paris Grey a quart is only $40 and a little goes a loooong way! We love it!

If your furniture is stained and you don't want to use chalk paint you'll have to get stripper and sand the stain so that the paint will stick. That's what my hubby is currently doing with our crib (formerly his and his siblings) and it is a major pain.

I painted a dark dresser light grey. I used just valspar from lowes that has a built in primer. Use a small roller that way you don't have brush strokes.

Make sure to clean it really well as part of your prep.  Use a good cleaner - any oils or grease can prevent the paint from sticking!
