Is a carer a real job?

Question

I have been a full time carer for my SO for almost 4 and a half years now, but something that a family member said recently has really upset me..

This family member basically said that because I am a carer that does not work for an agency (I get Carers Allowence instead of an actual wage) that this makes me a 'fake' carer, and that it's not a real job!

Is being a carer at home for a loved one instead of an agency that employs them classed as a real job? Or do people actually think that it's just the 'lazy' way out?

I'm a full time caregiver for my elderly grandmother. I also work full time. Being a caregiver is extremely hard and emotionally trying but it is not a job, in my opinion - it's taking care of a loved one and it is a self-sacrifice.

Is a stay at home mom a real job? Yes, u may not get paid for it but you are doing a thousand jobs to take care of your kids. Same as someone that stays home to care for someone in need. It is a job and you are working to provide that need. Some people get paid through the state to do that instead of hiring to come do it when it is not necessary. It is a job regardless if you get paid or not. Honestly its amazing the selflessness that is involved in taking care of someone else when you dont get paid for it. The satisfaction of helping out a loved one is the pay. My mom did that for my grandpa when he was sick. The hospital had a hard time with him so she chose to take him and care for him and have a nurse come out once or twice a week to help with the medicine. He lived with us until the day he died and i was right next to him and saw him die. I was glad to be there even though i was 7 because 2 months later my grandma died and i was not there and i hated myself for not being there. Anyone who cares and takes care of someone is a blessing in this world. Dont let someone get to you because to the person you take care of you are their angel.

Being a caregiver is a not an easy task, it is a job...it's a very hard job, sometimes thankless, and because it is your SO some will not see it as a "job" but that doesn't make it any easier nor should you allow it to make your feel less than anyone else.

Being a primary caregiver is a full time, often emotionally and physically draining job. That relative was being quite rude.
