My SIL's little girl is half white half black, and she has the cutest little Afro. The other day my SIL straightened her hair with a flat iron, and while she looked beautiful I was a little taken aback that she would do that to her her, I thought she would want to teach her to embrace her natural curls. But then I started thinking that when I was her age (6), my mom would use a curling iron on my hair, and I didn't have the same feeling about it. I don't know how to think about it now, because I feel strange about viewing it differently for black girls vs white girls. And I mean it's totally subconscious, and I didn't realize until I started thinking back to my own youth. All that aside, what do you think about heat styling little girls hair? Old enough to sit still obviously, but too young to do it themselves.
