I have a mandatory amount going into retirement each check. I just looked into starting a savings and am curious how much I'd need to put away too. Even $20 a month is better than not having any savings I imagine.

My husband has some of his paycheck deposited straight into our savings a month. I'm not sure what % of his check it is, but it builds up pretty quickly. We don't have any car payments/school loans to pay off anymore, just our mortgage so that helps us tremendously.

10-20% goes to my retirement account. 10% goes to savings. It is wise if you can to try and have 3-6 months worth of your expenses in savings.

What we do is we calculate how much we made each day of that weeks paycheck and take one days pay and put it away.
