Hell yes it can. My mother was extremely emotionally abusive and manipulative and told me how worthless and unwanted I was. You eventually begin to believe something if you hear it enough, and as a child and are impressionable anyway, it makes an impression that never goes away. I still get nauseated when I meet new people or have to give a presentation to a group and am so afraid of someone not liking me or laughing at me that I probably miss out on a lot of fun social stuff with really cool people because I was always told I wasn't worth anyone's time. I still feel worthless and unwanted sometimes. I'm 31 years old. Therapy helps, but those memories will always be there. Parents, please don't be shitty to your kids. It WILL hurt them forever.

Absolutely. It can make a person become socially withdrawn, introverted, and the lowered self-esteem can make them lose their confidence when speaking with others. They might also be afraid to talk to friends, family, or the opposite sex out of fear of angering their abuser. There are so many ways it can affect their social life.

Yep. My mam had a lot going on in her past with siblings, my dad (though she's only ever alluded to this) and she has no confidence in public whatsoever. She struggles if she doesn't know someone, if they are too loud, if they have used alcohol or if they seem to have an aggressive attitude.

I was in an emotionally abusive relationship for four years, I still have issues in my current relationship because im so screwed up, I also have extreme depression and anxiety from it. I'm getting better after almost five years but the damage can't be repaired.
