A dear friend did and recovered with counseling. Her pulling was associated with a pretty traumatic childhood  experience. She began volunteering with an org that helped other people with troubles and did a lot of self reflecting.

I've had trich for 5 years and I've gone 8 months pull free without pulling but i had a replse and had to cut my hair agine but it is possible to beat it!

I've stopped twice. Once when I had a brain injury and seemingly "forgot" to pull. And again at the beginning of this year. The first time lasted longer (6 months?) before a relapse. Both relapses happened due to relationship stresses. I've heard it never fully ceases. 😞💔

I just can't stop. I can not pull for like 2 weeks and then my fingers go up and pull out all the progress. I got coloring books, crochet, novels, but I still do it. It's anxiety and boredom.

I have done this for years now and it's annoying I wish I could quit but its something I can't control and it's making me have thin hair I've heard it's related to anxiety and something neurological that developed from something that was unsettling in your life!
