What's spotting??

So I'm not trying to conceive but I'm also not trying to not conceive. My last three periods I've had a brownish fluid just a couple days before my period actually started. Is this spotting or just releasing old blood?

I'm spotting its my third day but I barely had sex three weeks ago

Not sure but I'd guess it's old blood.
