Baby Showers: In Laws or Mother of Mom to be?

This is my first baby. When my sisters had kids my mom and I did the showers. However, sisters did not have inlaws involved... Do people usually just have one shower with both families or a shower for each family seperately?

My mom and my mother in law will probably work together to plan one for us.

For my first we had one given by my family and one by his (they don't live close) and then some friends where we lived (another town) also threw us a shower.

I am having one in each hometown. They are only an hour apart but both of us have such big families and a lot of family friends that want to be invited. SO one shower would be huge and not very personal for me. I'm also having one where we live now with my friends here...feeling very blessed but a little overwhelmed because I hate being the center of attention!

I've seen both ways, all together and one for each side of family. I would maybe take into account size of each family.
