My boyfriend of 5 years has recently been talking about spicing up our sex lives. He recently purchased sex toys for us for our anniversary.. My question is is this a good thing or bad thing?

Good thing. Things get 'boring' over time. Try a new things every couple if months if years, perfectly healthy. It's only bad if he wants you to do things you're not comfortable with.
