Advice please

My one year old still follows me thru the house. I get him distracted with toys and as soon as I walk away he freaks out and follows me. I don't mind but it's hard when I'm trying to do laundry in our basement which Just isn't kid friendly enough for me. Or when I'm trying to clean up.

What can I do to help him be more independent???
