What some of my large family has done is invite family to the ceremony and dancing only - skipping dinner.

It's your wedding, it's your budget. There's always that chance that some will take it personal but honestly looking back, I wish I would've done it. All up to you tho.

We had an open invitation to the wedding so our whole church was invited! Reception was by personal invitation. People understand it's just not possible sometimes and it's your day! Don't overspend on everyone else! You won't even notice much other that your spouse that day so really make it special for you two.

It's your wedding, do what you want. People will think it's rude, but so at least they get to come. That's their problem, and you don't need to explain why you're doing things in that way. You know why you're doing them, you're absolutely right, BABY FIRST!

To be fair anybody off the street can go to the wedding, if you're having it in a church it's a public place so anybody can rock up, they did at my wedding and there was nothing I could do about it.  And no it's not rude, it's your wedding!!!!! If people take offence it's theirs problem not yours.  Enjoy the day

It's your dad I decided I didn't want to have a wedding because my husband and I wanted a fancy honey moon and we could only do one of the other we got married at the courthouse and invited about 10 people to witness (the room was big) and the rest of our family and friends showed up to the reception we had a ball and most importantly myself and my husband got to spend two wonderful weeks in the Bahamas just us no kids. The wedding is for show in my opinion. Have a great time at your wedding best wishes!

A few people is fine but everyone who isn't family is pushing it. Maybe there are people there that had your back through a hard time that even your own family wasn't there for. Good luck

It's totally normal where I come from. The wedding ceremony is the main event, after all. We invited masses of people to that, and our families and closest friends came to the reception.

Overall it's rude. Maybe scale down cost of reception so it doesn't cost as much or just don't invite. There is not going to be any kind way to word the invite.
