I need some logical advice. I am almost 37 weeks pregnant and have been talking with a local midwife. I live in a small town that has one midwife who only attends home births, which is what I desire. Here is my problem: she is flakey. We met her at 9 weeks gestation (consultation) and she was late to the appointment and she doesn't return texts/calls in a timely manner. She recently (34 weeks) told me she would call me to schedule our first prenatal (I see an OB for prenatal care/labs) when she returned from vacation, which was to end the following day and I finally called her after 1.5 weeks of no contact. We scheduled an appointment for 10/23 at noon with my doula who drove 2 hours and the midwife didn't show up. I sent a text and then called, leaving a message. She did not call me until 5:30pm stating she wrote the wrong date down. Yet, when I spoke with her the week prior, she said, "See you next week" and stated she even packed her car for our appointment. Lets say she did write down the wrong date, why did it take her 5.5 hours after our scheduled appointment to call me back? I am a doula, so I know the stresses of the job, but I know she does not have any clients right now. What if I had been in labor? I have lost nearly all trust in her and my husband who was finally coming around to the idea is disheartened and unimpressed. I find her behavior completely unprofessional and I am worried about paying her up front because she may not show up! I just don't know what to do.
