Losing virginity pain

Okay so I'm 19, a virgin and have been at uni for 6 weeks.. Obviously the topic of sex came up at some point and I told my new housemates I'd never done anything before! Both of my best friends have had sex before And said it doesn't hurt, and my housemates said it really does hurt! Plus they said it hurts a few times after as well! I know everyone is different and it also depends whether yourself/someone else has done anything to you, but has anyone lost their virginity without having done anything beforehand? And does it always have to hurt first time?
