"To claim God exists is to deny God"

Clare

I was revisiting texts of my favorite theologian lately and became curious what this group would think of his claim in the title.

Paul Tillich, 20th century Lutheran theologian, argued that the claim of existence of a being (even a divine one) necessitates the finitude of such a being. Our concept of existence relies on identification of this from that - I exist because I am not this rock or that tree or you, but I am me. If we say God "exists," what is claimed to be Infinite/Eternal is reduced to a finite reality, thereby creating an unacceptable paradox. Tillich views this claim that God exists to be idolatrous. He articulates all this better than I just have. ;)

I think it's extremely helpful logic. But not everyone buys it...
