Growing up with technology-beneficial or damaging?

It's both! We can get news and that sort of stuff faster, but we do not communicate with other humans as often.

It's been extremely beneficial with our son. He's autistic and non verbal (will be next month) Within 3 weeks of letting him use my kindle, he could identify every letter in the alphabet. He could identify numbers 1-10 and knows 7 colors. Some kids abuse the privelage but it can be an amazing learning tool for others.

I think it hinders kids. I want my future kids to develop a love for reading and to write by hand properly. And if they don't live books or have sloppy handwriting at least they will read proficiently and can write. I will not be giving them computers and tablets until it is necessary for school and if that is before high school than it will only be used for school work. My kids will get a phone for emergency only.

I don't want to sound strict it's just I grew up without computers and my brother didn't. I value academics and ye wants to plat computer games. I don't want my kids to be the same way. Now in high school have fun on your laptop.

It has benefits and downsides. That's why my kids are allowed access to computers but it is strictly supervised, game time is strictly dependent on the time they have put into chores, homework, reading and outside play and they will not be getting cell phones or social media till they are considerably older. I survived my teen years just fine without all that crap and they will too, even if it does make me the meanest mommy in the whole wide world.

I think it depends on the dependance and usage. The tablet has been a miracle for special needs children and even children who are learning to read, etc. However, things like video games, social media, etc., I feel are damaging. Social media is damaging period and video games are damaging in excess.

I think it's kind of sad. I heard from a kid the other day that she wished she could go to a sleepover like what she saw on TV. I asked her what that was. (Essentially sleepovers of my generation.. Eating hoards of chips and drinking pop, talking about boys and crushes and other secrets. Pillow fights.. I asked her what they do now. She said her friends play on their phones most of the time and then they all watch a movie. That sucks!!

The most recent studies tell you that tablet use / social media use make a person more unhappy. But gaming however (at a responsible rate) increases happyness and the ability to plan as you go along the way. You train your brain in responding ro different types of situations.  A tablet can be a usefull way to learn. But it doesn't really stomp you off like some of the comments say. They simply afflict happiness.  (My view of the studies I've read)
