What's up with blood clots?

So... Perhaps I have to do more research, but what do you all know about birth control pills and their association with blood clots? Specifically, fatal blood clots. This makes me a little more hesitant to start the pill. 
Thoughts?

It's because of estrogen, my family has a history of blood clots so they put me on the mini pill which doesn't contain any estrogen. You can talk to your doctor about this! :)

My doctor told me that if you have a family history of blood clots or any sort of problem like that then you have a higher chance of getting clots. I was told that they would most likely happen in your legs first and even then it's a very very slim chance for it to happen. The only reason they tell you about it is because it has happened to some women before and they sued the company because they weren't informed that it could be a side effect.
