If your ex ask for money … do you give it to them?

If a distant ex (1 year or longer) comes to you for money because they've fell on hard times would you give them any? Curious on how others would handle the situation.

I had my ex, whom I haven't spoken to in over 4 years, ask me for money. I was inclined to help but this just seemed like history repeating itself and one of the reasons we separated. I did all the working they did all the taking (I'm female, he's male.)
