How can we help veterans?

Question

To clarify if you're not American we're doing a awful job at taking care of these people.

How can we help them in the system? And what are some good ways to help them outside it? (Charitys, socializing, anything a child could do, etc)

What are some things standing in our way of accomplishing better care for them?

Do you know anyone who's struggling?

I know I can't do much. But every year around this season I have people donate backpacks. It's called Operation Backpacks. Then we get socks and canned food shampoos toiletries ect. Blankets. Put them in backpacks and give them to Homeless Vets. I work with a Veteran Homeless Shelter and people will line up and get them. This year we got a lot of soaps and tooth brushes and gift cards which was amazing. We give them lists of places hiring and free therapy. I wish I could do more, & if ever given the chance I will.

It's not about helping veterans it's about veterans helping themselves... Most of them choose to live in the streets. If you were to go to a government facility or hospital you would see how much help there is out there for them. Most vets have severe PTSD so it is difficult for them to function. I have work with veterans and education and you would be surprised how much assistance they get and I have worked in a VA hospital and we do our best everyday to help as many as we can seeking help.

My husband has PTSD with paranoid schizophrenia cause by service in the Iraqi  war. There is not as much real help as people say yes there is some but not what they really need trust me I know it took literally 15 years of his parents and me fighting and suffering to get financial help. He is not able to keep a job, he does not drink or smoke just no longer mentally able to do what he is told. We have literally gone so many different routes and the actual programs the va Offers are only very temporary fixes not long term. I find the programs not actually affiliated with the VA focus on long term help besides just meds. But we have yet to find something that actually helps my husband.

There are already a lot of resources out there. I think there should be more outreach so veterans know how to find and use those resources.

Give them a fair chance at getting jobs and donate to wounded warriors.  That would make the biggest difference already

My husband had his leg amputated because the va docs didnt listen. The 1st outside doc that volunteers at the VA looked at my husband's foot and knew instantly that there was a problem. We find out later that if the VA would have listened he would have been able to save his leg. Now the va has started to help but i personally believe its because we moved out of California. There is a huge support system out there but its not going to be through the Va. My husband and i know a lot of amazing people. They best ppl to help vets are other vets. If anyone needs some info about it or ways to get the help u need just ask and ill do my best to send u in the right direction.
