Is my birth control failing?

I'm on nuvaring continuosly to stop my periods because they are so painful. I haven't had a period in a long time, and I never have spotting, which I know is normal. But I just started a full blown period. Cramps, heavy continuous bleeding and everything. Does this mean my birth control has failed? Or is it normal to get a break through period or something like that?
