Do you think 8 years old is too young to have a cell phone?

My son really wants a cell phone. We don't have a house phone. Just my cell phone. He does go to his grandmother and dad's house a lot during the week. We live walking distance from each other. I was thinking of getting him an android and a cheap $30 plan or minute phone. What you think?
