Yes you can and I do move the string or use toilet paper to grab the string when you take it out and I sleep with one in I change it right before I got to bed I've never had a problem

I always change mine when I pee. But a lot of my friends keep it in. I just think it's gross. Might not be the same hole but the tampon usually gets soaked and the string as well. Yuck. I also don't ever ever sleep with one in, I suggest using a pad sleeping.
