Sex and pregnancy

So I'm 17 weeks and my husband and I tried to have sex for the first time since conceiving, and I know that it can hurt, but this was down right excruciating. Like my first time having sex didn't hurt at all, I'm guessing what I experienced tonight is how your first time is supposed to feel. I almost started crying and I was screaming it hurt so bad. Is this normal? Should I tell my dr? I felt like I was being torn open... Anyone else feel like this?
