First time breastfeeding. Should I take a class?

I didn't take a breastfeeding class, I watched lots of videos and talked to every lactation person in the hospital. I also joined lots of Facebook support groups. I found that was good enough for me :)

I didn't. I saw the lactation counselor at the hospital once, and my doula was able to help me with any breastfeeding questions/issues I had.

I think it'd be just as good to read up on it. I don't think a class is necessary. I think you can gain a lot of the same knowledge just by reading and learning about what could happen, and be prepared for a lot of challenges, and be prepared to see a lactation consultant.

Some hospitals offer the class while you're there , I say if you feel confident to try on your own with at home research it's fine & if its unsuccessful at the hospital, just ask the nurses they'll help you.

I liked the class for the simple fact of learning the different holds, how to latch on, break the latch etc since they had visuals. Plus it gave me the expectation that it would be hard and I'd have to keep at it if I wanted to do it. It was fairly easy for me until my daughter got teeth but I learned how to adjust and the tips did come in handy. But most of my family was only around the first two weeks so if you have a lot of breastfeeders and you're comfortable asking them, you may not need it

I never took a class but wish I had. I wasn't expecting breast feeding to be so much work!

I never took a class and successfully breastfed my first for 13 months and currently breastfeeding my second. But I had a lot of support from my family and my sister breastfed her kids and helped me if I needed it. I also read a book about breastfeeding while I was pregnant with my first.

I took a class, and while I don't regret taking it, I did already know most of what she told us because I'd been doing a ton of reading about it. Whether you decide to take a class or not learn as much as you can beforehand! You'll still end up with lots of questions once you start, and it's definitely a learning curve, but it definitely helped my confidence to know as much as I could before my son was born.
