Trimester dates?

What are the weeks for trimesters? I always thought that first trimester is 12 weeks but I've seen several places it's 13?

I think it works like If you divide 40 by 3 the most you can do evenly is 13 so usually your first trimester is weeks 1-13 and then second is 14-26 and then third is 27-40

My doctor told me yesterday that the second trimester starts at 12 weeks. But me and my husband have decided to wait until week 14 to consider it the second trimester. Which is in two weeks.
