Abortion or murder?

So, this lady tried to do an abortion to herself at her house in the bathtub with a hanger. (Like they did way back in the day.) She was charged with attempt of murder. So, when someone tries to abort their own baby it's murder, but if they go get it done it's not? I get aborting your baby yourself is wrong, but how can she be charged with murder is professionals do it every day?

I'm not sure how this is a debate. It's certainly different. An abortion or termination is a medical procedure, sterilized and monitored. The same process is used to terminate a pregnancy due to problems with the fetus or risk of harm to the mother.

Coat hanger "abortion" is scary, unsterile, and inhumane. Definitely not ok. Abortion is accessible and available, at least in most places. It can also be very affordable especially at a clinic like PP. There isn't an excuse for this.

It's a good example of what will happen though if abortion is made illegal... Desperate women don't think about consequences

If this story is accurate (?!?!) it's a stark example of why we need to make safe, legal abortions more affordable and available to poor women.

When abortion is hard to get or illegal, that does not actually prevent abortion. It just creates more dangerous coat hanger abortions like this one.

The simple statistical truth is this:

The harder abortions are to get, the more desperate girls will turn to "back alley" abortions like this - and then get infections and die.

I'm sure this girl would have preferred a safe abortion if she had that option.  Obviously, for some logistical or financial reason (or because someone she was afraid of would have had to be informed about it), she could not get the safe and legal abortion she doubtlessly wanted.

After all- people don't do coat hanger abortions because they think it sounds like a fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon.  They do it because it's the only viable method they have.

Can it be true that the government then came in and charged this girl with murder to boot? Can you imagine the desperation and terror of this girl, with the government treating her poor-mans abortion as if it were homicide?

That kind of aggressive prosecution, if it actually happened, is so egregious and so obviously politically motivated and so flat-out cruel that it's almost hard to imagine it's real.

But then again- maybe I'm underestimating the single-mindedness of religious zealotry and dogmatism.  Who knows.

Anyway I'm betting this little exercise in misogyny and sadism didn't happen in midtown Manhattan.

I believe it was also bc she was 24 weeks & they consider that viable.. Which is crazy bc I lost my twins @ 22 weeks and had death certificates & had to do funeral stuff.. Messed up world.

Usually you are not charged with murder for an unborn child unless the baby is passed the age for a legal abortion aka viable

I think there could be some argument for how inhumane a coat hanger abortion could be. Even abortions in a medical facility can end up botched...I'm sure the chances of that or worse happening from a coat hanger is even higher.

She shouldn't be charged with murder, Well obviously it's disgusting but sometimes you have no choice. She should be charged with something else, not murder.
