Do you think parents that own a gun for protection are bad parents?

Why did you choose your answer? Do you own a gun?

My husband is a police officer, we have multiple firearms in our home. He is the best father I've ever met. Our guns are out of our childrens' reach, and they are locked in a safe. Simply owning a weapon does not determine if someone is a good or bad parent, but the level of precautionary measures they take with the weapons is paramount.

You lock your doors at night, to keep others out. That isn't enough sometimes. I care about my family more than I care about a stranger.

My husband and I own a gun. My parents own guns. Heck, everyone I know has a gun in there home. 
If someone were to break into my home, that gun and God is the only thing keeping me safe, because police can't be there as soon as an intruder is inside. I want a way to protect myself until they arrive.

Perfect example- I live in an apartment complex and my husband works night shift. It was close to midnight, and a fight broke out outside my window and someone pulled a gun. Of course, I was inside and not involved, but I felt so defenseless when I realized my husband had taken his gun and forgot it in his truck and i didn't have it. A five foot tall pregnant lady with a knife isn't very scary in that situation! Lol

I don't understand how wanting to protect your family would make you a bad parent. You can be negligent with guns but you can be negligent in general and THAT makes you a bad parent not owning a weapon.

I'm British so the thought of guns is bizarre to me but if I lived in a society where it was normal to own one then I'd probably want one as back up myself!! Far to many maniacs in the world, ignorance isn't always bliss I suppose.

My husband and I both own guns. Our son has been to many gun safety training classes. He knows how to properly handle and fire many different types of firearms.

My husbands a police officer so not only does his job require carrying and using a gun, but he conceal carries and has multiples in our house. So I guess he will be a bad parent because he will continue to have guns?
