Autism linked pcos?!?

Question

Yikes! I have pcos & ive been working with a fertility clinic to get me on track. Everything is working perfectly & now right before I ovulate.... I read these articles that just came out linking moms with pcos with a 59% higher risk of having a child with autism!

Now I'm scared to even try to get preggers!!!!

I work with people with autism daily & know the struggle it can be for the child & family.

I contacted my doctor to discuss my concerns, but she can't see me for 2 months!

Just looking to vent & some insight if anyone has any!

I get so irritated with studies about autism. I think they make people extra paranoid and I think they paint autism as something worse than death. Obviously no one would chose autism for their child but would you rather have no children? My best friend's son has autism and he is beautiful. He has a beautiful beautiful soul. He marches to his own drum, that's for sure, but he still brings joy to his parents.

When I was pregnant the first time around, my in laws got on me about taking my vitamins because a study was released saying not enough folic acid was connected to autism. It made me so mad because I was already taking my vitamins but also because they just don't know what causes it!!! It could just be the combination of the parents genes for all they know.

Sorry, rant over. On the bright side, my sister has PCOS and her kids are perfectly healthy. I feel like the pros out weigh the cons immensely.

You may have read before about the theory that androgens (male sex hormones) are a link to ASD? This theory is well supported with plenty of evidence. They even tested amniotic fluid to see what was present and the androgens are far higher. It is believed that this alters brain development and causes autism.

The university of Cambridge has done lots of research you may be interested in on exposure of testosterone to fetus.

The point to remember is there is often more than just the factor of pcos involved. There is genetics and environment playing a role in causing autism as well.

There are a lot of studies being conducted right now on what causes Autism. I feel like it's a type of medical and scientific race, like the fight to cure cancer. When I was pregnant with my first child, there were studies released that said obesity during pregnancy leads to Autism but nothing ever evolved from them. I wouldn't panic just yet. Studies are powerful to help find answers but they're not flawless, fact.

I have had PCOS for a really long time. My first child is not displaying any signs of Autism.

Regardless, Autism isn't the end of the world. I'd rather have a child with Autism than him have a million other diseases or disabilities. People with on the Autism spectrum still lead beautiful lives. As you know, since you work with them. Moms have the right to be concerned but don't panic yet.

This is all based on one study! I wouldn't give it much I know many people with Pcos and non if their kids have autism. Actually the kids that have autism that I know have moms without Pcos so I mean don't panic or not have kids the risk is still entirely too small years ago they said the flu shot called autism! lol some people still say that these days they link everything to autism Becuz they are desperately trying to find reason behind it! I really wouldn't worry about it all that much! Like I said it's all based on one study out of Sweden. I have Pcos and I'm having a boy so when I read that article I too freaked out! But I just don't even bother thinking about it now I mean regard less I'm due in 6 days so not much to do now but even so the risk is very small!

I see what your saying to not freak out. But there are so many degrees of autism from mild to sever.  I just wouldn't want to put my child at risk of having a life where they potentially hit their heads against a wall all day or hurt themselves in other ways.

I'm just scared! Nervous & confused & frustrated!

Even if you do have a child on the spectrum it won't be the end of the world, parenting as a whole is a struggle of sorts, having a neurotypical child doesn't mean having an easy child.
