How do you celebrate Christmas between two families?

Okay so the way both of our family's celebrate Christmas is Christmas eve have a party with the entire family. With food music everything. Then once it's midnight we open our gifts. Okay so what I'm wondering is how do you celebrate it or make it equal between yours and your husband's/boyfriend's family? It's a huge tradition in our families to be with each other once the clock strikes 12 because we go around hugging each other saying Merry Christmas. We spent last year with my family now this year we will spend it will his family. Then just go after to my family's the thing is though the way my boyfriend is, is that once it's late he automatically wants to go home. Which sucks because I think the way he wants it to go is, go to his family's at 5 or something spend all afternoon there up until midnight. Then go to my family's just to spend an hour or two there and not even be able to eat with then because theyll all be watching the kiddos open up their gifts and all would have already ate. So I am wondering how do you equal it up? I really don't want it to go that way..
