Is an internal ultra sound mandatory in the first trimester?

Some OB's I've called insist they ONLY do internal ultrasounds which seems ridiculous to me. One, because their office should be equipped to do internal AND external. And two, because some women may be uncomfortable with how invasive they are and should have the right to opt out of them. Is this normal?

Early in pregnancy it's difficult to see the baby and get the information they need to confirm and diagnose.. Often an external or abdominal ultrasound isn't performed until 12+ weeks. I imagine you have the right to decline any procedure or method, though I'm not sure other accurate methods are possible or available? You could always wait until abdominal scans are viable.

I have had multiple pregnancies with ultrasounds around 6w3d.  Each time we got wondeful clear images, measurements and sounds abdominally so there was no need for vaginal.  Around here they always attempt abdominal first before going to vaginal.

I had an abdominal ultrasound at 7 weeks, 4 days, and we saw everything. Got some clear shots of the baby and yolk sac, and he told me the heart rate was 163.

I went in at 8w 3d and they did an abdominal and saw everything just fine. 
My sister went in at 10w but to a whole different doctor and different state and they did hers transvaginally. 
So I think it just depends on the doctors and what they feel is or will be best.

I had my first ultrasound done at 6 weeks 5 days. We started with an abdominal and we couldn't see anything expect for my very full bladder. I emptied my bladder and we did a transvaginal ultrasound. Yes it's invasive and uncomfortable but we could see so much more that way.

It's also used to examine the uterus and all of your female parts to make sure there aren't any cists or other issues that may cause complications during pregnancy or for your little one. I had mine at 7 weeks. I was completely comfortable and was not painful at all. Here is the image from it 😍😊😍 that was 11 weeks ago! I'm now 18 weeks and if baby cooperates, will be finding out the gender, tomorrow! So good luck and know that baby will be okay 💗
